title: When to use Pictory or Lumen5 vs invideo
description: Pictory and Lumen5 turn an article into a video with their templates. invideo gives you an editable timeline after the first draft, with free edits.
---
Use Pictory or Lumen5 when you want a blog post turned into a video fast, in the look of their templates. Use invideo when you want to keep editing after the first draft, on a real timeline, and edits and exports are free.

## The same brief in both tools

The brief: turn a 1,200 word blog post into a 60 second video for LinkedIn, with a voiceover, stock visuals and the brand colors.

In Pictory, you paste the post's URL. It builds the video with stock visuals or your uploads, synced captions in your brand style, and an AI voice. You pick layouts, transitions, text styles and subtitle themes from its templates. For a change, you ask its agent or open the editor and work scene by scene.

In Lumen5, you paste the post's URL, upload a PDF, or add the text. Its AI Script Composer proposes scripts to choose from. Lumen5 then pairs the script with media, timing and motion for a rough cut. You add an AI voiceover and your branding.

In invideo, your agent reads the post and writes the script. It voices the script with a TTS model, finds stock video and music with `search_library`, and builds the video on a timeline with `insert_media`, `add_text` and `add_captions`. The brand colors and fonts live in a `context/brands/` entry, applied with `set_text_style`. After the first draft, you or the agent move, trim and replace any clip, line or caption. Then the agent runs `capture` and `export`.

## Use Pictory or Lumen5 when

These tools fit a fast first video from text.

- You want a video from a blog post in a few clicks, and the template look is fine.
- A marketer makes the video alone, with no agent.
- You make the same kind of article video every week and the template saves the design work.
- Pictory fits when you want its API to make branded videos from your own product.

## Use invideo when

invideo fits when the first draft is the start, not the end.

- You want to change one scene, one line or one caption after the draft without starting again.
- Your agent already has the article, and you want it to build the video in the same chat.
- You want the timeline itself: tracks, keyframes, a grade and the mix.
- You want to try two versions of the opening on branches from `timeline_history`.
- An editor finishes it in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

Edits and exports are free. Generation and transcripts cost credits. Paid stock costs a small credit charge, or one of your workspace's iStock licenses. Your agent runs a dry run first and tells you the price before it spends anything.

## Use both

Start in a template tool, then finish on a timeline. The hand-off is the downloaded video.

1. Make the first draft in Pictory or Lumen5 and download the video.
2. Upload it to the invideo project with `start_upload` and `add_media`.
3. Cut, reorder and add to it on a timeline: a new intro, music, captions.
4. Run `capture`, then `export`.

The template's text is part of the picture after download. To change that text, rebuild the scene in invideo with `add_text`.

## What Pictory and Lumen5 do better

Say it plainly: for a first draft from a URL, these tools have fewer steps.

- A URL in, a video out, with no prompt to write.
- Templates give a finished look with no design choices.
- Lumen5 offers several script options before it builds the video.
- A person with no agent and no editing skills gets a result.
