title: When to use Pictory vs invideo
description: Pictory turns a blog post into a video in its template look. invideo gives you an editable timeline after the first draft, with free edits.
---
It depends on what happens after the first draft. Use Pictory when you want a blog post turned into a video fast, in the look of its templates. Use invideo when you want to keep editing after the first draft, on a real timeline, where edits and exports are free.

Pictory shares a project with teammates and tells you to refresh when someone else changed it, and you duplicate a project for a variation. invideo is a multiplayer editor: you, your teammates and your agents work in one cloud project at the same time and watch every edit land live, each agent under its own name. Every timeline has branches, checkpoints and tags, like git branches for code: each person or agent works on their own branch, you compare the branches, restore any checkpoint, and make the winning branch the default. Anyone you share with can fork the project.

The job: turn a 1,200 word blog post into a 60 second video for LinkedIn, with a voiceover, stock visuals and the brand colors.

**In Pictory.** You paste the post's URL. It builds the video with stock visuals or your uploads, synced captions in your brand style, and an AI voice. You pick layouts, transitions, text styles and subtitle themes from its templates. For a change, you ask its agent or open the editor and work scene by scene. An outside agent reaches Pictory through its MCP server or API, which create and render new videos. They do not edit a project a person made.

**In invideo.** Your agent reads the post and writes the script. It voices the script with a TTS model, finds stock video and music with `search_library`, and builds the video on a timeline with `insert_media`, `add_text` and `add_captions`. The brand colors and fonts live in a `context/brands/` entry, applied with `set_text_style`. After the first draft, you or the agent move, trim and replace any clip, line or caption. Then the agent runs `capture` and `export`.

## Use Pictory when

Pictory fits a fast first video from text.

- You want a video from a blog post in a few clicks, and the template look is fine.
- A marketer makes the video alone, with no agent.
- You make the same kind of article video every week and the template saves the design work.
- You want its API to make branded videos from your own product.

## What Pictory does better

Say it plainly: for a first draft from a URL, Pictory has fewer steps.

- A URL in, a video out, with no prompt to write.
- Templates give a finished look with no design choices.
- A person with no agent and no editing skills gets a result.

## Use invideo when

invideo fits when the first draft is the start, not the end.

- You want to change one scene, one line or one caption after the draft without starting again.
- Your agent already has the article, and you want it to build the video in the same chat.
- You want the timeline itself: tracks, keyframes, a grade and the mix.
- You want to try two versions of the opening on branches, and keep the one you like as the default.
- An editor finishes it in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

## Use both

Start in Pictory, then finish on a timeline. The hand-off is the downloaded video.

1. Make the first draft in Pictory and download the video.
2. Upload it to the invideo project with `start_upload` and `add_media`.
3. Cut, reorder and add to it on a timeline: a new intro, music, captions.
4. Run `capture`, then `export`.

The template's text is part of the picture after download. To change that text, rebuild the scene in invideo with `add_text`.
