title: When to use Magnific vs invideo
description: Magnific's MCP cuts, joins, grades and upscales finished clips. invideo adds captions, titles and a multi-track timeline.
---
Use Magnific when your agent needs to cut, join, grade or upscale finished clips through its MCP server. Use invideo when the video needs captions, titles, and clips laid out on several tracks that a person can review.

## The same brief in both tools

The brief: a 30 second product reel from four finished clips, graded to one look, with a title card, captions on the voiceover and a logo in the corner.

With Magnific's MCP server, your agent trims each clip, joins the clips into one MP4, and grades them with a LUT from its catalog or by hand. It can also blend a cut with generated frames, upscale the result, or deliver ProRes or DNxHR for an editor. Its MCP docs list no caption, title or timeline tools. The title card, the captions and the logo need another tool.

In invideo, your agent places the four clips on a timeline on a branch from `timeline_history`. It trims them with `trim_clip`, grades them with `apply_lut` or `edit_grade`, and adds the title with `add_text`. It reads the voiceover with `media` `audio.transcript` and places a caption track with `add_captions`. The logo goes on its own track. You see each edit in the editor, then the agent runs `capture` and `export`.

## At a glance

The rows below are the ones that change the choice for this job.

| | Magnific | invideo |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Editable timeline after the cut | None listed; each tool makes a new clip | A multi-track timeline you and your agent share live |
| Cuts and joins | Trim, join, and a cut that generates frames across the join | `split_clip`, `trim_clip`, `move_clip` and transitions |
| Grades | A LUT from its catalog, manual settings, or a match to a reference image | `apply_lut`, `edit_grade`, and LUT files you upload |
| Captions and titles | Not in its MCP docs | `add_captions` and `add_text` |
| Generation | Images, video, audio and 3D | Video, image, audio and 3D models through `generate` |
| Upscale and HDR | Video upscale with Topaz or Magnific, SDR to HDR | `video.upscale`, `image.upscale`, and upscale and HDR models |
| Agent access | Remote MCP server with OAuth sign-in | CLI and skills for terminal agents; MCP server for clients without a shell |
| Files out | ProRes, DNxHR or HEVC video, 16-bit PNG or TIFF, layered PSD, WAV | MP4, or a Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve project |
| Offline | Cloud | Cloud |

## Use Magnific when

Magnific fits work on single clips.

- Your agent needs to trim, join or grade finished clips and hand back a file.
- A cut needs generated frames across the join so it blends.
- You want to restyle footage from a prompt, or add or remove an element, and keep the motion.
- You deliver ProRes, DNxHR, 16-bit stills or layered PSD files to a finishing editor.

## Use invideo when

invideo fits work that becomes one layered video.

- The video needs captions that stay editable after the cut.
- It needs titles and a logo on their own tracks.
- Several clips, voice and music sit on different tracks and a person reviews the layout.
- You want a project file for Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

Edits and exports are free. Generation and transcripts cost credits. Paid stock costs a small credit charge, or one of your workspace's iStock licenses. Your agent runs a dry run first and tells you the price before it spends anything. Models retire. If a model is not found, your agent runs `find_models` with the job in words, uses the best match, and tells you.

## Use both

Magnific models also run inside invideo. `media` `image.upscale` takes `magnific_upscaler_creative` or `magnific_upscaler_precision_v2` as its `model`. Your agent runs `dry_run` first, because upscales cost credits.

For a clip you made in Magnific, the hand-off is the file.

1. Make or grade the clip in Magnific.
2. Bring it into the invideo project with `add_media` from its URL, or `start_upload` for a local file.
3. Place it on a timeline, then add captions, titles and music.
4. Run `capture`, then `export`.

## What Magnific does better

Say it plainly: on a single clip, Magnific's MCP does things invideo's timeline does not.

- A cut that generates new frames across the join.
- Prompt edits to footage that keep the motion: restyle, add, replace or remove.
- A grade matched to a reference image.
- Delivery as ProRes, DNxHR, 16-bit PNG or TIFF, or layered PSD.
